Wired has announced the winners of 2007 Rave Awards and J.K. Rowling has won one, along with over 20 other winners, for "changing your mind". A ceremony in San Francisco will be held on 27th of April.
"In 1990, before the rise of Second Life and World of Warcraft, before the triumph of MMORPs, a young woman named Joanne Rowling was stuck on a delayed four-hour train ride to King's Cross station in London. She began to conjure up an outcast boy heading to a sorcery school called Hogwarts. Seven years and countless drafts later, the first Harry Potter novel plunged readers into a parallel universe more compelling than any online world imaginable. Rowling was paid a $4,000 advance. Today she is the first person to become a billionaire by writing books. And when "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," the seventh and final volume in the series, apparates on July 21, it will mark the conclusion of an incredible run: more than 325 million books sold in 200 countries, not to mention the $3 billion or so earned by the first four movies and billions more from games, action figures, and product tie-ins. Rowling is the reigning master of what you might call MMFWs-massively ! multireader fictional worlds-inspiring a generation of screen-fed kids to devour old-fashioned books on paper." An article on Scholastic CEO, Richard Robinson has appeared online. He briefly talks about Harry Potter, Scholastic's loyalty to J.K. Rowling and some other things. You can read the interview here.
Q. How did you get Harry Potter in the first place it was first published in England, wasn’t it? A. She had written her first book, and it was published in England. She then went through the English version of the Yellow Pages and looked for an agent. She says she just liked the name Christopher Little she’s a whimsical character and he directed the auction for rights outside the U.K. We spotted the book Arthur Levine, an editor here, did and we bid $105,000, which was quite a bit for an unknown author. J. K. Rowling is the 13th most influential Briton, according to Guardian. You can view the full list of the 50 most influential Britons here.
You can't sell 375m books and not influence someone. Especially when those books lead to a multi-film movie franchise and all the concomitant gewgaws and plastic toys. But perhaps the most important contribution she's made is the way that she and Harry Potter have reached millions of children who'd previously not exhibited any enthusiasm for reading, leading not just to an enthusiasm for more reading but also to the creation of millions of words of fan-fiction and perhaps a revitalised generation of creative readers and writers. A new article on Daniel Radcliffe has appeared online. He talks about growing up, 'Equus' and various other things. You can read the article here.
Since beating off 400,000 hopefuls over four auditions when he was 11, Dan has seen his fee per movie rise handsomely. For the opening instalment, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (2001), he was reportedly paid $145,000; for the fourth, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, $14.5 million. With Radcliffe also receiving a share of revenue from sales of movie-related merchandise, his net worth by the time of the release in July of the fifth film, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, should be around $50 million. But as Harry Potter knows only too well, fame and success attract dark forces, too. Dan understands that now he's approaching adulthood, his celebrity means the paparazzi - and citizen snappers armed with camera-phones - see him as fair game. An interview with Evanna Lynch, who plays Luna Lovegood, has appeared online. She talks about her role, Order of the Phoenix and Half-Blood Prince movies, as well as Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows book. You can read the entire interview here.
Luna is so free and seems to drift along with life, dealing with everything as it comes to her.I have more goals so I’ve more worries. I think that’s why I love Luna so much. She doesn’t have to have achievements or approval to feel satisfied and she’s as wonderful and balanced a person as anyone could be. She knows worrying is pointless so she just floats and I really admire that in her. <...> I know some things about what is ahead for Luna so I can’t give you my ideas there... Deathly Hallows, well, none of us (‘us’ meaning the fans, we’re a community :)) know, but we have theories. My favourite theory is that it refers to the veil in the Department of Mysteries.
